Bessie Mae Burns, 83, of 13509 Pulaski Drive, Hagerstown, Md., died Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at her home.

Bessie was born Sept. 14, 1925, in Williamsport, Md., the daughter of the late Abram Ray and Sarah Esther Madison Flurie. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas N. Thompson, in 1954; and her second husband, George L. Burns Jr., in 1979.

Bessie was a homemaker.

She was of the United Methodist faith.

She was a member of AARP and the Order of the Eastern Star, Hagerstown.

Bessie is survived by four daughters, Sallie A. Thompson, San Mateo, Calif., and Susan Burns Conlon, Nancy L. Burns and Mary F. Burns, all of Hagerstown; a son, Thomas N. Thompson Jr., Hagerstown; a sister, Esther F. Harne, Williamsport; three brothers, Charles Flurie, Naples, Fla., Eugene Flurie, Williamsport, and Abram Flurie, Hagerstown; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; beloved companions, Bridgette and Hope; nieces; nephews; great-nieces; and great-nephews.


Besides her husband, Bessie was preceded in death by three brothers, Alan Flurie, James Flurie and Robert Flurie.

Graveside services will be held Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport, with the Rev. Dean Pryor officiating.
