N.C. man killed in I-81 crash near Martinsburg

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- An 82-year-old North Carolina man died Sunday when the 2008 Honda Civic in which he was traveling went off Interstate 81 at the King Street exit near downtown Martinsburg and struck a tree, according to West Virginia State Police.

The man was identified as Donald Walker Hanson, 3102 Wild Lark Court, Charlotte, N.C., state police said in a press release.

The Honda Civic was traveling north when it went off the interstate at the beginning of the King Street exit, said state police, who were notified at 2:20 p.m.

The car went through a grassy area between the interstate and the exit ramp and struck a culvert and the tree, state police said.

Hanson was the only person in the car, police said.

The cause of the wreck is under investigation, state police said.
