Victim of Wolfsville fire identified

August 24, 2009

WOLFSVILLE, Md. -- A 59-year-old woman who died early Saturday in a house fire in Wolfsville, a Frederick County community just south of Smithsburg, has been identified as Ethel Mercer.

Investigators from the Frederick County Fire Marshal's Office and the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office determined the fire was caused by smoking in bed.

There were no working smoking alarms in the home, Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services spokesman Mike Dmuchowski said in a news release.

Fire and rescue units were called to the house fire in the 14000 block of Brown Road in Wolfsville at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Dmuchowski said. When firefighters arrived, one occupant met them outside and said another person still was inside, he said.

Firefighters found Mercer on the second floor, which was filled with heavy smoke, Dmuchowski said. She was removed from the home and died at the scene, he said.

There were no injuries to firefighters, Dmuchowski said. Damage was estimated at $20,000, he said.
