Roland Wolfe "Strap" McKinsey, 88, of 121 Sunbrook Lane, Hagerstown, Md., passed away Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at Reeders Memorial Home, Boonsboro.

Born Thursday, April 28, 1921, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Hiram Maurice McKinsey and Blanche Wolfe McKinsey.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sigrid Rebecca McKinsey, in 2004.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy on board the USS Louisville.

He was employed at Mack Trucks Inc., retiring in 1983 after 22 years of service. He was later employed as clubhouse manager for the Hagerstown Suns for many years.


He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge 378, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 and VFW Post 1936.

In 1958, he served as president of the Sharpsburg Bluebirds Semi Pro baseball team. In the late 1960s, he was instrumental in organizing Funkstown American Legion Baseball, where he also volunteered as coach. For many years, he volunteered at Valley Little League, he was an avid Yankee fan and St. Maria Goretti basketball supporter.

He is survived by one daughter, Jody L. McKinsey and companion, Ray Buffington, of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two sons, Roland R. "Mick" McKinsey and wife, Nancy, of Hagerstown, and Gary L. McKinsey and wife, Tracy, of Hagerstown; one sister, Louise B. McKinsey of Hagerstown; and three grandchildren, Steve Walsh of Hagerstown, Tana McKinsey of Hagerstown and Jack McKinsey of Hagerstown.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Julia Wiles and Jane Smith; and a brother, Jack McKinsey.

Family will receive friends at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Private services and interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
