WILLIAMSPORT -- Gary Kimberly Hovermill, 69, of Williamsport, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at his home following a battle with cancer.

Gary was born in Charles Town, W.Va., on Jan. 1, 1940, the son of the late Victor R. and Vivian Young Hovermill.

He attended North Hagerstown High School.

He served with the U.S. Army.

He was employed as a correctional officer at MCI, Hagerstown, until his retirement in 1982.

Gary was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsport.

Gary was a life member of the following organizations: Dixon-Troxell American Legion Post 211, Funkstown; the National Rifle Association; Western Maryland Sportsman's Club; Conococheague Tribe 84 Improved Order of Red Men, Williamsport; and Izaak Walton League of America, where he was heavily involved with the youth programs, while promoting the League and its purpose.


He was an avid hunter and fisherman since childhood.

Gary is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Gebhardt Hovermill; two sisters, Patricia Bush, Charles Town, and Mary Jane Youngblood, Hagers-town; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at 7 p.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsport, with the Rev. W. Gregory Martin officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35 W. Potomac St., Williamsport, MD 21795.
