Henry Bascum Neal, 94, of Hagerstown, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, at Washington County Hospital.

Born April 15, 1915, in New Tazewell, Tenn., he was the son of the late Henry Bascum and Jenny (Burke) Neal and stepson of the late Nettie (Richardson) Neal.

As a young man, Henry was certified in watch and clock repair, having his own shop in New Tazewell. He moved to Baltimore during World War II to work at Glen L. Martin; and, after the war, he moved to Hagerstown where he was employed until retirement at Fairchild, as an aircraft electrician. After retirement, he enjoyed more than 20 winters in Mesa, Ariz.

He was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Hagerstown for more than 50 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Ruth (Lambert) Neal; a daughter, Deborah Sayles and husband, Jerry, of Fairview, N.C.; two sons, Robert Neal of Hagerstown and Ken Neal of San Francisco, Calif.; a sister, Alice Neal of Hagerstown; one granddaughter, Hannah Sayles of Fairview; and a niece, Gaye Lynn Benton of San Antonio, Texas.


Henry was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Neal of California.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown with Pastor Richard Jewel officiating.

Friends will be received on Saturday immediately following the service at the funeral home.
