Fair hosting Farmers Market

August 21, 2009

RANSON, W.Va. -- In an effort to promote local agriculture, the Jefferson County Fair will host a new Fair Farmers Market beginning Sunday and running through the week of the fair.

The market will be open Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m.; Monday through Friday, 4 to 9 p.m.; and Saturday, 1 to 9 p.m., according to a news release.

The farmers market will showcase a sampling of produce from vendors who are active around Jefferson County. Patrons will be able to sign up to receive weekly harvest updates via e-mail, which will provide consumers with recipes and lists of freshly picked produce available at the markets throughout the county during the entire market season.

"Citizens of Jefferson County continue to express their desire to purchase locally grown products because they understand the quality of locally grown food," Kellie S. Boles, agriculture development officer for the Jefferson County Development Authority, said in the release.

"Fairgoers want to buy the food we grow in Jefferson County, and this is the perfect opportunity to bring the growers and the consumers together," said Boles, who also is the superintendent of the Fair Farmers Market.

Boles said the market will include locally grown peaches, apples, sweet corn, squash, green beans and other local products.

In addition, the Jefferson County Fair welcomes back its educational exhibit, where fairgoers can interact and learn about the many facets of agriculture and its importance in the community. Housed with the farmers market, the educational exhibit will feature a corn box and milking cow, along with Veggie Twister and a trout stream provided by the USDA Cool and Cold Water Institute.
