Albert William Smith, 90, of Hagerstown, Md., died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at his home.

Born April 25, 1919, near Sabillasville, Md., he was the son of the late Simon L. and Lottie Mae (Eckard) Smith. He was the husband of the late Julia Frances (Sours) Smith, who died Feb. 4, 1993.

Albert moved to the Hagerstown area in 1940. He was a truck driver for Masser Motor Express Co., which later became Pony Express and eventually merged with Hall's Motor Transit Co. In 1981, Albert retired from Hall's Motor Transit, Hagerstown, where he was a truck driver for 41 years and earned the Million Mile Safety Award.

Albert was a member of the Teamsters Local Union No. 992 Retirees Club, The Million Mile Club of Hall's Motor Transit Co. and the Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Co., Leitersburg, Md.


He is survived by one son, Leonard E. Smith and wife Brenda J. of Greencastle, Pa.; three sisters, Mary Flair of Spring Hill, Fla., Helen Crowe of Pickens, S.C., and Pauline Cool of Frederick, Md.; three grandchildren, Pamela Smith of Williamsport, Md., and Doreen Jenkins and Rebecca Hunt, both of Greencastle, Pa.; five great-grandchildren, Kayley Smith, Devin Fishel, Carlyn Jenkins, Jewelia Hunt and Jaydn Hunt; and a dedicated family friend, Patricia Martin.

In addition to his parents, Albert was preceded in death by one brother, William L. Smith, and one sister, Ruth Klingensmith.

The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at the Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown. The Rev. Kevin P. Lay will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, Md.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at the funeral home.
