Jackets zip up win over Suns

August 18, 2009

Augusta got six to go and billed it to the Hagerstown Suns.

The GreenJackets scored six runs in the first three innings on Monday and forced the Suns to play catch-up the rest of the way en route to a 7-5 victory.

Augusta won three of the four games in the series. The Suns fell to 4-20 at home in the second half.

The GreenJackets got to Suns starter Paul Demny (2-10) early, who didn't help his cause with five walks.

Augusta took a 3-0 lead in the first when three walks set up Juan Perez's base-clearing double.

August took a 6-0 lead in the third when Josh Mazzola walked and scored on Perez's second double. Johnny Morrell followed with a two-run home run to center field.

The Suns mounted a comeback, scoring two runs in the third and seventh innings to move within 6-4.

Hagerstown got help from two Augusta errors to set up an RBI single by Derek Norris and Charlie Fermaint's sacrifice fly.

Tyler Moore was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Fermaint added an RBI single in the seventh.

Augusta starter Eric Surkamp won, collecting nine strikeouts in six innings.

The Suns stranded 12 runners in the loss, including the tying runs in the ninth.
