Around Funkstown

It's here

Unbelievable. School starts Wednesday. How amazing is that? Hopefully, everyone is ready to get back into the routines.

To start things off, there are orientations tonight at South Hagerstown High School for incoming freshmen and at E. Russell Hicks Middle School for sixth-graders entering the school.

Meet the Teacher Night for South High will be Wednesday, Aug. 26. Keep checking with your child for more information.

Please keep the PTAs at your child's school in mind. Join and help out where you can. I am sure that over the next few weeks, you will have many opportunities to sign up.

Yard sale for a cause

While we are discussing South Hagerstown High School, I want to remind everyone that the South High Alumni Association does many wonderful things for the school, including providing scholarships to seniors.

So why not find a way to help out the Alumni Association and get some things cleaned out of the house? Summer is winding down and what better time to get in the garage and basement, and yes even the attic, and round up those items you no longer need?

On Saturday, Sept. 19, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the alumni association will hold a yard sale at the school. Spaces cost $10 to rent.

For more information, call Christy at 301-416-7681.

Just because summer is winding down does not mean we are done with picnics.

Dixon-Troxell American Legion Post 211 has two picnics coming up at end of the month. On Saturday, Aug. 29, the Legion will hold a picnic at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va., at noon. Any community member who would like to visit with the veterans that day is welcome to attend.

On Sunday, Aug. 30, the Legion will hold a pig roast. Tickets cost $10 per person. Members and guests are welcome. The proceeds from the event will go to support programs for children and youths at the Legion.
