Walter "Jim" Sweeney Jr., 89, of Hagerstown, passed away Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 3, 1920, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Walter E. Sweeney Sr. and Agnes (Elower) Sweeney.

Mr. Sweeney worked as a boilermaker for the Western Maryland Railway and in maintenance for the Washington County Board of Education.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 3rd Armored Division. He received several medals, including the Purple Heart for wounds received during the Battle of the Bulge.


He was a charter member of Maranatha Brethren Church and Ambassador Sunday School Class.

He was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

He is survived by his loving wife, Freda M. (Jones) Sweeney; one daughter, JoAnn Sweeney of Hagerstown; two sons, Ronald E. Sweeney and Chris J. Sweeney, both of Hagerstown; three grandchildren, Tod Mobley, Jon Mobley and Amy Thompson; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jean Shupp; and one brother, Joseph Sweeney.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Bill Crowe officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
