Greencastle fire company plans golf tourney

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - It might be months away, but the Greencastle Rescue Hose Co. is already spreading the word about its annual golf tournament because organizers hope to fill the course with golfers.

"Our goal is to have at least 144 people on the course that day," said Norman D. Hann, an organizer of the event. "That is why we are telling people about it now."

Known as the HOCO (Hose Company) Classic Golf Tournament, it is one of the major fundraisers for the company.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit the volunteer fire, emergency and rescue services of the Rescue Hose Co., according to a press release from the organization.

The 2009 HOCO Classic will be on Oct. 17 starting sharply at 8 a.m. at Greencastle Greens Golf Course, Hann said.

With two months until the shotgun signals the start of the tournament, Hann is confident he can register enough teams to fill the course.

Last year, he said the organization waited too long to open registration, something he will not repeat this year.

"I can't tell you how many people we had or how much we raised (last year), but we want to do better this year," he said. "It's a few months ahead so we can get enough golfers."

The event raises money for Rescue Hose Co. through the entry fee and community sponsorship, he said.

Set at $65 per person, the fee includes 18 holes of golf with a cart and a meal courtesy of Sunnyway Diner.

A registration deadline has been set at Sept. 30 and interested golfers, particularly teams of four, are encouraged to register early, he said.
