Teen to be tried as adult in Victor Cullen escape

August 13, 2009

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A Frederick County judge has ruled that a teen who escaped from the Victor Cullen Center will be tried as an adult.

Judge John Tisdale made the ruling Wednesday after watching video prosecutors say shows 17-year-old Dayquane Barnes attacking four staff members during the escape.

Barnes is one of nine residents of the state-run detention center, including eight juveniles, who will be tried as adults in the escape of more than a dozen youths in May.

Six staff members were hurt and required medical leave as a result of their injuries. In addition to 12 charges linked to the escape, Barnes also faces two counts of second-degree assault in separate attacks on two residents.

A bail review hearing for Barnes is scheduled for Thursday.
