SMITHSBURG -- A 47-year-old Waynesboro, Pa., man was killed Thursday night when he wrecked his motorcycle near the intersection of Md. 491 and Pleasant Valley Road, a few miles east of Smithsburg, according to Maryland State Police.

The crash was reported at 9:15 p.m.

Police said Douglas E. White had been traveling southbound on Md. 491at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the 2000 Aprilia VR60 motorcycle he was driving and went off the northbound side of the roadway.

White was separated from the motorcycle and struck a guardrail, fence and several trees, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other vehicles or people were involved in the collision, police said.

Because clothing was scattered at the scene, state police searched the area to make sure no one else was riding on the motorcycle, Sgt. S. Wallace said.
