Sign-up under way for ag conservation program

August 12, 2009

ANNAPOLIS -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that the Natural Resources Conservation Service has begun sign-up for the new Conservation Stewardship Program. Applications will be accepted until Sept. 30.

It is a voluntary program that encourages agricultural and forestry producers to maintain existing conservation activities and adopt additional ones on their operations.

Farmers and forest landowners who are interested in the program are encouraged to visit their local field office to determine if their ag operation and conservation plans could make them eligible for the new program.

The program focuses on farmers installing additional new conservation practices on their land.

Those who enrolled land under the prior Conservation Security Program cannot enroll that same land in the new program.

To apply for the new program, participants will be encouraged to use a self-screening checklist to determine whether the program is suitable for them or their operation. It is available on the NRCS Web site at www.nrcs.usda.gov.
