Martinsburg police officer charged with battery

August 10, 2009

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A lieutenant with the Martinsburg Police Department was arraigned Monday morning on a charge of battery, according to an e-mailed release issued by Police Chief T.C. "Ted" Anderson.

The charge against Lt. John Sherman Jr. stemmed from a call for a battery in progress to which West Virginia State Police responded Thursday.

Troopers responding to the 7:20 p.m. call to 9512 Tuscarora Pike learned that one of the people involved in the incident was Sherman, who was off duty at the time, the release alleges.

As a result of the investigation conducted by West Virginia State Police, a battery warrant for Sherman was obtained from Berkeley Co. Magistrate Sandra L. Miller.

In addition to the criminal investigation, the Martinsburg Police Department had begun an administrative investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, Sherman has been placed on administrative leave with pay, the release says.
