Donations sought for annual duck race

August 10, 2009|By MARLO BARNHART

FUNKSTOWN -- Preparations are under way for the ninth annual Antietam Creek duck race Saturday, Aug. 29, sponsored by the Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co.

The Town of Funkstown already has a $50 donation toward the effort, just as it did last year.

Firefighters are asking area businesses for additional contributions that can be used as prizes for duck race winners. Those donations could be items representing the businesses or cash that could be used as prize money.

The ducks will enter the water at approximately 2 p.m. on race day. The finish line is directly behind the fire station property.

At least 25 prizes will be awarded for the first 25 ducks to cross the finish line. The first-place prize is $300 cash.

Ducks cost $5 each or seven for $25. Applications are available at the fire hall and from any Funkstown firefighter.

A $300 grocery raffle will also be held on race day. Tickets cost $1 for the chance to win steaks, roasts, ground beef and chicken.

A barbecue featuring chicken, and open-pit beef and ham sandwiches will be available on race day.
