Humane Society asking for aluminum cans

August 08, 2009

The Humane Society of Washington County is holding Cans for Critters, an aluminum can collection program as a fundraising effort. Shelter officials are asking for empty soda and beer cans that can be recycled for cash.

"We are asking the public to collect cans and bring them to the shelter so we can recycle them," said Margaret Becker, manager of volunteer, public assistance and humane education programs at the shelter.

"This is a great way to keep the items out of the landfill and use the items to benefit homeless animals."

Bags of cans can be taken to the shelter during regular working hours or can be left at the front entrance. The program is ongoing.

"This is a nice neighborhood or church project," said Paul Miller, executive director of the shelter. "It is also a great way to get your fellow employees together on an office-wide project."

The Humane Society is at 13011 Maugansville Road in Hagerstown. Call 301-733-2060 or go to www.hswcmd.org for information on animal-related issues, directions to the shelter and information about programs and services.
