August 07, 2009

CLEAR SPRING -- A Martinsburg, W.Va., man was charged early Friday in connection with an overnight robbery in Clear Spring in which the victim was dragged by a moving car during a scuffle over a rifle, the Washington County Sheriff's Department said.

Terry Wayne Siford Jr., 32, of 92 Zeiler Drive in Martinsburg, was charged with second-degree assault, robbery, theft of less than $500, rogue and vagabond, and reckless endangerment, Lt. Arthur L. Overcash said Friday.

The charges stemmed from an incident at about 1:46 a.m. in the 12900 block of Cohill Road, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Department.

A Cohill Road resident was awakened by the sound of a car running, grabbed a .22-caliber rifle, and went outside, where he saw an unfamiliar car idling in his driveway, deputies said. The resident fired a rifle shot into the ground as a warning and was confronted from behind by the intruder, deputies said.

The intruder grabbed the rifle, jumped into the running car, and began to drive off, deputies said.

The Cohill Road resident reached into the moving car and attempted to get control of the rifle, but was dragged a short distance and forced to let go, deputies said. He suffered minor injuries but did not require medical attention, deputies said.

Deputies stopped Siford on Kemps Mill Road after a deputy realized his vehicle matched the description of the intruder's car, the release said. Deputies recovered the rifle and about $100 in cash, apparently taken from an unlocked vehicle at the site of the earlier scuffle, deputies aid.

Siford was being held Friday morning pending an appearance before a District Court Commissioner, Overcash said.
