Railroad crossing repairs to cause detours

Repairs to the railroad crossing on Eastern Boulevard north of Security Road are scheduled to begin Aug. 17 and will require detours for four days, Washington County Deputy Director of Public Works Robert Slocum said.

Eastern Boulevard will be closed between Security Road and Klick Way from 8 a.m. Aug. 17 through Aug. 20, Slocum said.

Northbound traffic will be detoured west on Dual Highway, then north on Burhans Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue (U.S. 11), then east on Northern Avenue, which connects with Eastern Boulevard at Leitersburg Pike.

Southbound traffic will be detoured south on Potomac Avenue, then east on Washington Street (U.S. 40), which becomes Dual Highway and intersects with Eastern Boulevard.

Washington County spokesman Norman Bassett said drivers should expect heavier traffic on the detour routes and throughout the downtown area during the closure.

"It's going to be a massive detour," Bassett said.

The crossing is being repaired by CSX, which finished its repairs to the crossing on Virginia Avenue near Park Circle on Friday.

Slocum said CSX would remove the rail, ties and asphalt from the crossing and replace them to create a smoother surface for traffic.

Rubber mats previously used at the crossing will be replaced with wood ties, he said.
