August 05, 2009

GOLF

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Beaver Creek Country Club pro Dirk Schultz qualified for the 2010 PGA Professional National Championship by finishing third in the Middle Atlantic PGA Championship on Wednesday at Woodmont Country Club.

Schultz finished the third round on the tough, 7,200-yard North Course with a 1-over-par 73 that gave him a tournament total of 2-under-par 214. Schultz went through the front nine at 2-over 38 and came back with a 1-under 35 on the back. He had three birdies and four bogeys.

The 2010 championship will be played at French Lick Resort in Indiana on the Pete Dye Course.

The top 12 finishers Wednesday gained a trip. Winner Rick Schuller, of Chester, Va., carded a 2-under 70 for a 7-under-par 209. John Stone, of Newport News, Va., was second at 213.

As he was at the 2009 PNC where he was the only MAPGA pro to make the cut, Schultz was the lowest scoring player among Maryland-based golfers at Woodmont.
