Three Brunswick students charged in Middletown High field fire

MIDDLETOWN, Md. -- Three Brunswick High School students have been arrested in connection with a fire that damaged the artificial turf playing field at Middletown High School, the Maryland State Fire Marshal's office announced Wednesday.

The three 17-year-olds were arrested early Wednesday following a joint investigation conducted by the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the Frederick County Fire Marshal's Office and the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, Deputy State Fire Marshal Joseph G. Zurolo said.

The three youths were charged with first-degree malicious burning and malicious destruction of property. They were released to the custody of their parents pending further action by the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services, the release said.

Investigators learned that the fire at the school in the 200 block of Schoolhouse Drive occurred early Saturday morning but wasn't discovered until Monday, the release said.

The fire caused an estimated $20,000 in damage to a section of the artificial turf, the fire marshal's office said.
