Hickory Elementary holds Going Green activities

In July, Hickory Elementary School held a Going Green Summer Academy. Throughout the month, the students read books about conserving resources, went on field trips to see the effects humans have on the environment and made environmentally friendly projects.

The kickoff to the program was a trip to the Washington County Landfill. At the landfill, students learned what happens when they throw things away and the effects reducing, reusing and recycling can have on the landfill.

The students spent the next few weeks using trash to make projects such as sculptures, solar cookers, terrariums, paper (made out of dryer lint) and bird feeders. The grand finale was a Going Green Galleria, where the students shared their projects with parents, friends and Washington County teachers and staff.
