Volleyball registration set for middle school girls

From Aug. 25 to 27, the North Western Volleyball Program will hold registration for girls in the sixth, seventh and eighth grade who attend Western Heights or Northern middle schools.

Registration will be in the gym at Western Heights Middle School (back of the building) from 7 to 8 p.m.

Players will fill out consent forms and pay a $25 registration fee, which includes two clinics, a league T-shirt, intramural program and use of facility insurance. Registration must be completed prior to attending the clinics.

The clinics will be held on skill levels. Players with two or more years of experience will attend the clinics on Monday, Aug. 31, and Wednesday, Sept. 2. Beginners will attend the clinics on Tuesday, Sept. 1, and Thursday, Sept. 3.

West End Senior Citizens Club to meet

On Thursday, Aug. 13, the West End Senior Citizens Club will meet at the Western Sizzlin' restaurant on York Road in Halfway at 11:30 a.m. for lunch.

Free school supplies

Washington Square United Methodist Church in the West End will hold its annual free school supply giveaway Saturday, Aug. 15, beginning at 9 a.m.

The church is at 538 Washington Ave. in Hagerstown, next door to the Western Enterprise Fire Hall.

Women Build

Washington County Women Build, a volunteer program associated with Habitat for Humanity, is counting down to Saturday, Aug. 15, when materials start arriving for Women Build House No. 4.

Established locally in 2005, Women Build is starting its fourth house at 1018 Lanvale St. in Hagerstown.

Women Build works side by side with other volunteers and partner families learning to build houses to address the housing crisis facing women and children.

Any woman interested in participating in helping build the house can contact Pam Meredith, Washington County Women Build chair, at or go to the work site on Aug 15.

The group will meet Monday, Aug. 10, at 6 p.m. at Oliver's Pub at Long Meadow Shopping Center.

Saturday, Aug. 22 - Keedysville Little Antietam Community Center, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Monday, Aug. 24 - Funkstown American Legion, 1 to 7 p.m.

Monday, Aug. 31 - Boonsboro American Legion, 1 to 7 p.m.

Blood drives are also held at the Hagerstown Donor Center on Conrad Court Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 6 p.m.

Puttin' for Paws golf tournament

The Humane Society of Washington County and What a Tan are hosting the second annual Puttin' for Paws golf tournament at Black Rock Golf Course Friday, Aug. 14.

Players can register online at, by calling 301-733-2060 and asking for Kim McGlaughlin, at ext. 239, or by registering the day of the event beginning at 7:30 a.m. A shotgun start will be at 8:30 a.m. The format is a captain's choice, best ball scramble.

South High PTA

The South Hagerstown High School PTA will meet for the first time Thursday, Aug. 13, at 6 p.m. in the media center.
