SMITHSBURG -- A total of $1,727.23 has been raised for a community center for Smithsburg youths, Smithsburg Town Council members were told during their regular meeting Tuesday night.

Smithsburg resident Lisa Linthicum, who is spearheading the project, said the facility is needed to keep youths off the streets and give them productive ways to spend their time. She has also talked to council members about applying for grants for the center.

One council member has said he has been involved in a search for a building to house the center.

Town council members recently agreed that the town would set up a fund to accept donations for the establishment of a youth center.

Mayor Mildred "Mickey" Myers said Tuesday night that she believes such a center could cost upward of $1 million.
