Mooney says he's being attacked in phone poll

August 04, 2009

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- State Sen. Alex Mooney says an opponent is targeting him with a push poll.

Mooney, R-Frederick/Washington, is up for re-election in 2010. He says was contacted last week by supporters who said they'd received calls for the poll. He says the poll mentioned the name of Candy Greenway, a Democrat who challenged him in 2006.

But Greenway denies any involvement in the poll and says she hasn't yet decided if she will challenge Mooney again. She also got calls from supporters who'd been contacted for the poll. She says she doesn't know who paid for it.

Mooney says the poll attacks his positions on education and gun control. But Greenway says it merely appears to be testing name recognition.

A push poll asks questions that attack a candidate instead of seeking legitimate information from voters.
