Around Funkstown

August moves

Tick, tick, tick and now the clock chimes August.

August used to be a hot, long, drawn-out month. Now, August seems to be the fast and furious month. Did you know that the students head back to classes on Wednesday, Aug. 19? Yes, I promise you, it's true. I am still running into people who had no idea school started this early.

So my advice to you is to get the ball rolling and grab those school supply lists. You have about two weeks to get the bedtime routine back into place. About two weeks to cross just one more summer fun item off your list.

Orientation planned for Hicks sixth-graders

E. Russell Hicks Middle School will hold a sixth- grade WEB Orientation Day Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.

WEB stands for Where Everyone Belongs. As daunting as middle school can be, the staff at Hicks has found a way to ease that transition. Students will be assigned an eighth-grade WEB leader to welcome sixth-graders to middle school and support them through the school year. The day will include activities starting in larger groups and then becoming smaller and more personal. Students should wear comfortable clothes and sneakers, and leave backpacks at home. Buses will be running their regular routes, so be sure to be ready at the regular time for pickup. Children should expect a call from their eighth-grade WEB leader a few days prior to personally invite them to the orientation.

For more information, call the school at 301-766-8110.

The E. Russell Hicks Middle School volleyball program is holding registration for girls for the upcoming season.

The league is for girls in sixth, seventh and eighth grades.

For more information, call Bridget Pearl at 301-791-0867.
