George A. Wagner Sr., 95, of Hagerstown, Md., died Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, at Washington County Hospital.

He was born May 19, 1914, the second son of George I. and Mary Wagner.

He was married to Genevieve A. Strait Wagner for 62 years.

He worked for Warner Brothers until the area theater closed.

He served in the Army during World War II. He worked at Fairchild and retired from Mack Trucks in 1979.

He volunteered at The Maryland Theatre for 65 years. He served as recording secretary for local UAW 171.

He was a member of St. Mary's and St. Ann Catholic Church. He was a Eucharistic minister for St. Ann and received a Medal of Valor from the Archdiocese of Baltimore. He was in the choir at St. Mary's and St. Ann Catholic Church.


He was an accomplished photographer and calligraphist.

He is survived by his wife and three sons, George A. Wagner Jr. of Kinnelon, N.J., Randall E. Wagner of Hagerstown and Gerard J. Wagner of Clear Spring, Md. He had six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Sister M. Valeria, SSND of Baltimore, Md., and Regina Ditto Haerer of Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. C. Doug Kenney and the Rev. Mike Jendrek as celebrants. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery. Graveside military honors will be conducted by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A Christian wake will be held today at 8:30 p.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to St. Ann Catholic Church Choir or The Maryland Theatre, 21 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
