Area Roundup -- Schultz charges to third in Mid-Atlantic PGA

August 04, 2009

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Beaver Creek Country Club professional Dirk Schultz changed plenty of positions in the standings on Tuesday, all for the positive.

Schultz carded a 5-under-par 67 in the second round of the Middle Atlantic PGA Pro Championship at Woodmont Country Club, climbing from 27th place after Monday into sole possession of third place.

After an opening-round 74 on Woodmont's longer, 7,200-yard North Course, Schultz came out firing and posted five birdies on the shorter South Course, playing just over 6,700 yards.

"I putted good, made those 5-, 6-footers," said Schultz. "My driver has been a little loose, but I'm playing within myself."

Schultz carries his two-day 141 into today's final round on the North Course two strokes behind Rick Schuller and one stroke behind John Stone. That threesome will be in the final group teeing off at 8:40 a.m.

Fountain Head Country Club pro Jim Schouller made the cut with a 2-over-par 74 Tuesday for a 150 and a tie for 36th. He tees off at 8 a.m. Only the top 40 percent of the original field of 172 players will play the final round.

The top 12 golfers gain an automatic berth in the 2010 PGA National Championship in French Lick, Ind.
