Public meeting tonight on canal restoration



The National Park Service will host a public information meeting regarding proposed restoration of canal operations at Williamsport. The meeting will be held tonight at 7 at the Community Building in Byron Memorial Park.

Projects to be discussed include rehabilitating the municipal storage yard adjacent to the Cushwa basin, repairing Lock 44 leaks, restoring the railroad lift bridge, restoring the Conococheague Aqueduct and the canal prism and towpath for a mile upstream of the aqueduct, introducing canal boat operations, and historic preservation and visitor services work at the Cushwa Warehouse.

The meeting agenda will allow the public to propose additional alternatives.

Conococheague Little League 11-12 All Stars are state champions, winning the Maryland State 11-12 Little League Baseball Tournament in Waldorf, Md. The team advances to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament in Bristol, Conn., where they will begin play Friday.

The Little League will be selling "Team Maryland" T-shirts tonight at the ballfield in Byron Memorial Park from 6 to 8. The shirts cost $15. All proceeds will be used to help defray travel costs for the tournament. Call Sabrina Kelbaugh at 301-223-4556 to make other arrangements to buy shirts.

The community is extremely proud of these young athletes and our best wishes are with them as they continue in this playoff quest.

Benefit ride planned



The Red Men Riders will hold its third annual benefit ride for the Parent-Child Center Saturday (rain date is Saturday, Aug. 15.) The Parent-Child Center is a nonprofit organization that works for the prevention of child abuse and teen pregnancy, along with offering many community needs.

The ride begins at the Improved Order of Red Men Tribe 84, 16129 Lappans Road. Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the ride starts at 11 a.m. Cost is $25 per rider and $15 per passenger. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided. All riders will receive a T-shirt.

The ride ends at Cancun Cantina at 1 p.m. with a light lunch buffet. The raffle grand prize is a black leather recliner donated by Dentler Brothers Furniture.

Wildcat football tryout schedule



Coach Randy Longnecker has issued the following tryout schedule for the WHS Wildcat football team:

o Wednesday, Aug. 12, 5:30 p.m. - Conditioning test at the high school track.

o Thursday, Aug. 13, 4 p.m. - Conditioning test at the high school track.

o Friday, Aug. 14 - Equipment issue for all players who pass the conditioning test at the school gym in the following order: 4 p.m., seniors; 4:30 p.m., juniors; 5 p.m., sophomores; and 5:30 p.m., freshmen.

o Saturday, Aug. 15, 7:30 a.m. - Report to the high school gym for the first day of practice.

Vendors needed for Harvest Hoedown



Planning for the 2009 Harvest Hoedown in Williamsport is in full swing and in need of vendors. Vendor space costs $20 each.

The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Byron Memorial Park.

Summer concert series continues



Tonight, Voices of Truth entertains from 6 to 6:30 in the band shell at Byron Memorial Park.

The Stoney Creek Bluegrass Band returns Sunday from 4:30 to 7 p.m. for an encore performance. This lively group drew a large crowd last month and had everyone tapping their toes.

Clothes of Hope Ministry holds grand opening



The Clothes of Hope Ministry at Williamsport United Methodist Church will hold its grand opening Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and from 6 to 8 p.m.

The ministry is set up to sell clothes for a nominal fee. All funds received will be used to purchase new seasonal items and under garments that will in turn be offered for a nominal fee.

It will be open for shopping on the first Thursday of the month from 9 a.m. to noon and from 6 to 8 p.m. On the second and fourth Thursdays, donated clothes will be received from 9:30 to 11: 30 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

Williamsport United Methodist Church is at 25 E. Church St. Everyone is welcome.

Public meeting on rezoning planned



American Legion Post 202 is requesting permission to rezone adjacent property from suburban residential to employment center. The public hearing will be held Monday, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at Town Hall.

WHS Mega Reunion update



The WHS Mega Reunion, for those alumni who graduated prior to 1991 from Williamsport High School, will be held Saturday, Sept. 19.

It is not too late to register. You still have until Sept. 1 to sign up online at www.PartyPlanning101.com or send your check (postmarked no later than Sept. 1) made payable to WHS Mega Reunion, c/o Linda Bowman Ebersole, 11119 Hopewell Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740. Cost is $25 per person.

The evening will include a buffet dinner featuring sandwich wraps and various salads. A cash bar will be available.

Music will be provided by a disc jockey who will start the evening at 6 p.m. He will play the top three songs from each year from 1950 through 1990 and will include some WHS highlights from each year.
