Arthur J. Sharer, 87, of Hagerstown, Md., died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

He was born Jan. 19, 1922, in the Sharpsburg (Smoketown) area. He was the oldest son of the late Arthur C. and Pearl Baker Sharer.

His wife, Elaine Gertrude Snodderly Sharer, preceded him in death on Oct. 6, 1991.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He received the Purple Heart for being wounded in the Battle of the Bulge.

He retired from Fairchild Aircraft in 1986.

He was a member of Salem Reformed Church, Mercersburg VFW and the Southside Senior Citizen Bowling League.

He is survived by two sons, Terry L. Sharer and wife, Susan, and Robert A. Sharer and wife, Mary Ann; two daughters, Joyce E. Sharer, and Debra J. Cushwa and husband, William; two brothers, Ezra Sharer and Albert Sharer; sister, Pearl Shank; grandchildren, Tammy Aaron, Tracy Mazzie, Christopher Sharer, Stacie Sperry, Steven Presgraves and Christina Cushwa; great-grandchildren, Aaron Sharer, Taylor Sharer, Ryan Aaron, Colton Aaron, Ryan Sharer, Brady Sperry, Riley Mazzie, Madison Sharer and Caleb Sperry; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Mitchell; and half sister, Polly O'Neal.

A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Salem Reformed Church, 13182 Salem Church Road, Hagerstown. The Rev. Stephen E. Wagoner will officiate. Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors at the graveside by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, and one hour before the service at the church.
