Smithsburg Lions award scholarships

SMITHSBURG -- The Smithsburg Lions Club honored two recent graduates with $500 scholarships at the club's annual Charter Night May 27 at the Mountain Gate Restaurant in Waynesboro, Pa.

Club President Jack Wenthe introduced the recipients and their families, and presented the scholarships.

The first recipient was Kayla Marie Grout, a student at Smithsburg High School.

She has received the following honors and awards: STARS 2009 and Faculty Honor Award in 2007; varsity letter in track -- 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009; varsity letter in indoor track -- 2007, 2008 and 2009; varsity letter in cross country -- 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Kayla was cheerleading captain in 2007, captain of the cross country team in 2008 and captain of the indoor track team in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

She has been a member of the Latin Club and the Future Business Leaders of America. She has volunteered as camp counselor at Camp Tohigola, supervised young teenagers at camp for a week out of every year since 2007, and worked the concession stand at the Smithsburg Steam and Craft Show.

She has also volunteered at Festival of Trees by supervising children while they did Christmas activities.

She is employed by the Hagerstown Suns and Designer Sunglasses.

Kayla hopes to earn a bachelor's degree in business and accounting at Shippensburg University, where she has been accepted.

Kayla is the daughter of Lisa Grout, and the granddaughter of Ann Stouffer and the late Dave Stouffer, a member of the Smithsburg Lions Club.

The second recipient was Andrew Justin Matthews, a student at Smithsburg High School.

He has received the following awards: STARS 2006; honor roll -- 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009; distinguished honors -- 2009; and National Technical Honor Society.

Andrew was a member of the Drama Club from 2005 to 2009. He helps teachers set up their rooms in school. He has worked in retail as a bagger, stocker and sales associate.

He plans to attend Frostburg State University and pursue a career in theater and musical arts, and has received an Antietam Association Scholarship.

Andrew is the son of Daniel and Sue Matthews.

The Smithsburg Lions Club serves Smithsburg and surrounding communities.
