ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- Samuel Carpenter Birnbaum of Sharpsburg was recently awarded the Hampton Davey Award at the annual St. Mary's College of Maryland Awards Convocation.
The award was established in 2000 as a tribute to Associate Professor of Political Science Hampton "Red" Davey, recognizing an outstanding senior majoring in political science.
Birnbaum graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in political science, and a minor in international languages and cultures (Chinese).
He has participated in two D.C. internships, studied Mandarin in Shanghai and spent a summer traveling from Western China to Indonesia.
On campus, Birnbaum led St. Mary's Votes and won the 2008 Petruccelli Award.
Next year, Birnbaum will return to Western China on a fellowship from Princeton University to work with a nonprofit group helping ethnic minorities.
