Teacher of the Year to be announced Tuesday



MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Five women are finalists for the 2009-10 Berkeley County Teacher of the Year award to be announced Tuesday in the Hedgesville (W.Va.) High School auditorium, Berkeley County Schools announced.

The awards ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The finalists are Susan Bucey, Musselman High School; Mary Beth Cornell, Hedgesville Middle School; Cynthia Evarts, Orchard View Intermediate; Carol Hamilton of Spring Mills Middle School and Candace Smith, Tuscarora Elementary School. The Board of Education's regular meeting will follow the ceremony in the high school's media center.

Shepherd hoops team to host golf tournament



SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University men's basketball team will hold the Big Horn Corporate Challenge Golf Tournament on Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. at Cress Creek Country Club.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Shepherd University Men's Basketball Scholarship Fund. The tournament consists of a four-person scramble, total team USGA handicap (minimum 40), and a 50-50 drawing and door prizes for the cost of $720 per team. The team package includes a boxed lunch, on-course refreshments and a buffet awards banquet for each player; membership in the Big Horn Club for each player; two season tickets; team tee sign at the tournament; and a recognition package.

Dinner on the Diamond fundraiser planned

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University's Dinner on the Diamond fundraiser will be Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 6:30 p.m. at Fairfax Field.

A selection of grilled favorites and Outback originals will be made from scratch on-site. Admission is $50 for adults ($40 tax-deductible); $15 for children, ages 6 to 12e ($10 tax-deductible); and free for children younger than six.
