Jockeys' appeals hearing slated for Wednesday

August 03, 2009

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- A West Virginia Racing Commission appeals hearing on penalties against seven jockeys and a clerk of scales is scheduled to start Wednesday at Charles Town Races & Slots.

The penalties stem from allegations that the jockeys exceeded their allowable weights for the track's March 26 race card. The extra weight wasn't illegal, but it had to be publicly reported.

Jockeys Anthony Mawing, Lawrence Reynolds, Alexis Rios-Conde, Tony Maragh, Luis Perez, Dale Whittaker and Jesus Sanchez were suspended for 30 days and fined $1,000 each. They obtained a temporary restraining order that allowed them to race until their appeal is heard.

The clerk of scales is Mike Garrison. His license was revoked.

According to Kelli Talbott, a deputy attorney general who represents the commission, the hearing is scheduled to run Wednesday through Friday.
