John Lloyd Martz Sr., 83, of Hagerstown, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 9, 1926, in Boonsboro, he was the son of the late Benjamin Daniel and Lucy Alice (Kline) Martz.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He retired as a machinist at Mack Trucks in Hagerstown in 1991, and also worked for Fairchild Aircraft and Westinghouse Electric.

John was a lifetime member and finance officer of Washington County AMVETS Post 10 and state department of Maryland; past commander of the state department of AMVETS and Post 10; finance officer for the Joint Veterans of Hagerstown, he formerly served on the NEC of AMVETS, Hagerstown VFW Post 1936; He was hospital chairman and VAVS of AMVETS, Conococheague Red Men Tribe 84; Sad Sacks, Sack 101 of Frederick and Funkstown American Legion Post 211.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Betty Lee (Long) Martz; one daughter, "Susie" (Martz) and husband, Norman L. Stouffer, of Midlothian, Texas; three sons, John L. Martz Jr. of Hagerstown, Gerald E. Martz Sr. and wife, Barbara S., of Boonsboro, and Richard E. Martz Sr. of Hagerstown; daughter-in-law, Linda L. Martz of Greencastle, Pa.; two brothers, Gerald B. Martz Sr. of Hagerstown and James H. Martz Sr. of Sharpsburg; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Gary Lee Martz Sr.; one brother, Allen Eugene Martz; and one sister, Betty Lee Martz.

Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Robert C. Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, with military honors being conducted by Washington County AMVETS Post 10, Thurmont AMVETS Post 7 and the Marine Corps League of Hagerstown.

Family and friends will be received Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
