WILLIAMSPORT - Elmer Stanley "Gizmo" Moats, 89, of 17114 Lombard St. in Williamsport, Md., passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at his home.

Born Nov. 24, 1919, in Fairplay, Md., he was the son of the late Luther James Sr. and Anna May Cline Moats.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Elmer retired in 1981 from the Western Maryland Railway, where he was employed as a mechanical engineer.

He was a member of the Western Maryland Sportsman's Club in Sharpsburg.

Elmer is survived by one sister, Verda McBratney, nephew, John McBratney, and nephew, William McBratney and wife, Collette, all of Philadelphia, Pa., nephew, Daniel Moats and fiance, Kitty of Big Pool, Md., and nephew, David Moats of Hagerstown.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Bussard Moats, in 1975; and two brothers, Luther J. Moats Jr. and Albert M. Moats.

Graveside services will be Friday, July 31, 2009, at 2 p.m. in Manor Cemetery, Tilghmanton, Md., with the Rev. Ernest E. Witmer officiating. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 of Hagerstown.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army, 534 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, MD 21740 or Humane Society of Washington County, 13011 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
