Railroad crossing work at Park Circle completed

July 31, 2009

HAGERSTOWN -- The railroad crossing on Virginia Avenue near Park Circle in Hagerstown was reopened to traffic Friday after workers from CSX Corp. finished replacing the tracks, Assistant City Engineer Jim Bender said.

"It's much better now than it was," he said.

For some time, the crossing had drawn complaints from motorists because rotting timbers made passage bumpy.

About a year ago, the city put up signs on Virginia Avenue telling the public how to call CSX and report problems with the crossing.

The work, which involved removing the rails, ties and railbed at the crossing, began Tuesday morning.
