Hagerstown waits a day to begin PONY East Zone play

July 31, 2009

BROCKTON, Mass. -- Friday afternoon's opening action in the PONY League East Zone Tournament at Brockton lasted exactly one inning, before a fast-moving band of rainstorms washed out the rest of the schedule.

New Bedford had taken a 1-0 first inning lead over Virginia in the first game, when heavy rains forced the players and spectators to scramble for cover at Gilbert Walker Playground. The rain only lasted about an hour, but the field received enough of a soaking to make resuming play impossible.

The revamped schedule for today now has four games on tap. New Bedford and Virginia will resume their contest at 9 a.m., while Hagerstown faces host Brockton at 11:30 a.m.  The losers from those first two games will meet in an elimination game at 2 p.m., while the winning teams from the opening round will square off at 4:30 p.m.

The original schedule in the double-elimination format had just the championship game slated for Sunday. The new version could have as many as three games Sunday.
