Conococheague's LL title bid on hold

July 30, 2009

WALDORF, Md. -- It had been 18 years since an 11- and 12-year-old All-Star team from Washington County had won the Maryland State Little League Baseball Tournament when Federal turned the trick last year.

Conococheague's All-Stars have an opportunity to give the county back-to-back state titles for the first time in 36 years. They'll just have to wait another day to do it.

Wednesday's losers' bracket final between Brunswick and Hughesville was barely under way when rain forced its postponement. The game will be played in its entirety today at 6 p.m.

Conococheague will play the winner of that game in the championship round Friday at 6 p.m. A Conococheague loss would result in a decisive game on Saturday at noon.

The winner of the state tournament advances to the Mid-Atlantic Regional, which begins Aug. 7 in Bristol, Conn. The regional champ moves on to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., beginning Aug. 21.

Only three Washington County teams have advanced to the World Series: Federal in 2008 and National in 1950 and 1968.

County teams have won back-to-back state titles three times. The most recent was National in 1972 and 1973. National also won consecutive state crowns in 1964 and 1965. Conococheague and West End won state titles in 1961 and 1962, respectively.
