Annual peach fest set for Aug. 8 and 9



The Leitersburg Ruritan Club will hold its 30th annual Leitersburg Peach Festival Saturday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 9, from noon to 5 p.m. at Leitersburg Ruritan Community Park.

The menu will include fresh peaches, peach pies, peach ice cream, sausage, ham and barbecue beef sandwiches, fresh-cut french fries and funnel cakes. There will be more than 60 craft stands, a petting zoo, antique tractors, a quilt raffle, children's barrel train, peach pie contest and pony rides.

The event will be held behind the Leitersburg Fire Hall.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 462 in Smithsburg met July 22 as John, the chapter leader, talked about his trip to Orlando, Fla., for International Recognition Days.

He said TOPS members from all 50 states and Canada attended.

He said the speakers gave motivational speeches about their weight-loss experiences.

John also talked about the benefits of walking. He said he walked more than 50 miles in nine days in Orlando and lost 2 1/2 pounds.

Sandy will lead the program at Thursday's meeting.

The chapter meets Thursdays at the United Methodist Church, 51 S. Main St. in Smithsburg. Weigh-in starts at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 6 p.m.

VBS starts today



Trinity Lutheran Church in Smithsburg, 16 N. Main St., is holding vacation Bible school today through Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

It is for those ages 4 through sixth grade.

Library event



Learn how to create a bowl, magnets, pins and more from torn paper at the Smithsburg Library, a branch of Washington County Free Library.

This intro to papier mache will show how to take what would be trash and turn it into useful art. This is a two-night event - one night to tear paper (Thursday, Aug. 6, at 6 p.m.)and the next night to mold your masterpiece (Friday, Aug. 7, at 6 p.m.). This activity is for those ages 12 to 17.

Class of 1949



The Smithsburg High School class of 1949 will hold its 60th reunion Saturday, Aug. 15, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Parlor House Restaurant at Potomac Shopping Center in Waynesboro, Pa.

The group will be ordering from the menu in the restaurant's private room. Reservations are due by Saturday.
