Fire marshal investigating Kennedy Street blaze

July 28, 2009

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- A two-alarm fire in downtown Chambersburg on Monday mostly was contained to a front living room, but smoke damage spread throughout the apartments at 151 Kennedy St., Chambersburg Fire Chief Terry Osborne said.

The smell of smoke woke a neighbor about 3 a.m., then the woman discovered flames at the front of the building, Osborne said.

The neighbor had concerns that a family might be inside, he said.

"When we were responding, we were getting initial information about entrapment," Osborne said.

Firefighters quickly discovered the apartment was empty, he said.

A Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire at the brick home. Osborne said he did not find any smoke detectors inside.

Firefighters from seven departments were on the scene until 5 a.m., he said.
