Lance Walter Gercke, 59, of 2007 Maplewood Drive in Hagerstown, Md., died Friday, July 24, 2009, at his home.

Born Nov. 1, 1949, in New York City, he was the son of the late Walter A. Gercke and Elsa Soine Gercke Vesper.

He was employed by Con Edison in New York from 1971 to 1986. He owned and operated The Bottom Line in Funks-town, Md., for 16 years. He was a tax accountant, and provided accounting and tax preparation services for the local community.

He was a lifetime honorary board member of the Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co.

He coached the Smithsburg High School junior varsity soccer team from 1991 to 1995.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen Zimmermann Gercke; two daughters, Kathryn Gercke Chumas of Damascus, Md., and Jennifer Gercke Whittington of Hagerstown; one sister, Lydia Gercke Eastlack of Moorestown, N.J.; and three grandchildren, Sydney Chumas, Madison Whittington and Chase Whittington.


Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. George A. Limmer and the Rev. Dean Pryor will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Prayers will be recited at 6 p.m.
