Rail project to begin Tuesday

July 26, 2009

Work crews from CSX Corp. are to begin removing and replacing the existing railroad crossing on Virginia Avenue near Park Circle beginning Tuesday at 7 a.m.

The work will involve removing the existing rails, ties and railbed at the crossing, and rebuilding the crossing with new materials, the City of Hagerstown said in a news release.

The city provided the following detour information:

o Northbound traffic on Virginia Avenue will be detoured around the work zone via Memorial Boulevard and Summit Avenue.

o Southbound local traffic on Virginia Avenue will be allowed to access driveways on either side of the roadway up to the crossing; all other southbound traffic will be detoured around the area via Summit Avenue and Memorial Boulevard.

CSX anticipates that the work on the crossing will be completed by 4:30 p.m. Friday, the city says.

Emergency vehicles will not be able to pass through the work area.
