ATLANTA - Michael Digman of Hagerstown, a computer engineering major, earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average for the past two years at Georgia Tech University.

He has held a research position at the university since his first semester. Michael's work resulted in the successful co-authoring of a published paper and the awarding of the $1,500 Georgia Tech PURA grant for individual research. More individual publications are planned this summer.

During his two years at Georgia Tech, Michael also worked as a computer science teaching assistant, completed the Atlanta full marathon, learned how to ride a bike and finished an Olympic distance triathlon.

Michael is spending his summer at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center designing software to aid the operation of a satellite that will be launched next year. He is designing a ray tracer with a friend from MIT in his spare time.

Michael has been accepted into Cornell University, College of Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering Program, beginning in the fall. He hopes to continue his research while attending the Ivy League university.

He is a 2007 graduate of North Hagerstown High School.

He is the son of Theresa and Steven Digman of Hagerstown.




Melissa DiMercurio has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Hagerstown Community College.

Melissa, the daughter of Dom and Donna DiMercurio, is a 2007 graduate of Boonsboro High School.

She will be pursuing a degree in communications this fall at Hofstra University in New York.




WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Leah Beachley of Hagerstown has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Wake Forest University.

She is a 2008 graduate of North Hagerstown High School.




GRANVILLE, Ohio - Erica Catherine DiMercurio of Hagerstown has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Denison University.

She is majoring in educational studies and English literature.




FROSTBURG, Md. - Jennifer A. Nalley of Smithsburg has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Frostburg State University.

She has a 4.0 grade-point average.




BLACKSBURG, Va. - The following area students have been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Virginia Tech:

Jacob N. Geffert of Martinsburg, W.Va, a freshman majoring in architecture in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies.

Evan G. Thomas of Martinsburg, a senior majoring in electrical engineering in the College of Engineering.




SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Shantel Rene Bowie of Frederick, Md., received a bachelor of arts degree in social and behavioral sciences from Seton Hall University.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The following area students were among those who graduated from Virginia Tech May 15:

Christopher Dorsey of Charles Town, W.Va., who received a bachelor of arts degree in economics from the College of Science.

George Schramm of Shepherdstown, W.Va., who received a bachelor of arts degree in interdisciplinary studies from the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.




COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Ricky W. Lewis has been named to the dean's list for the fall and spring semesters at the University of Maryland, College Park. He will begin his senior year next month, and is majoring in criminology and criminal justice.

Lewis is a 2004 graduate of Smithsburg High School. He serves as a specialist in the 443rd Military Police Co., U.S. Army Reserve, based in Owings Mills, Md. He was previously deployed from June 2006 to September 2007 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, as a member of the 324th M.P. Battalion, formerly based in Chambersburg, Pa.

He is the son of Kevin and Cindy Lewis of Cavetown.




COLCHESTER, Vt. - Drennan G. Hicks, son of Clyde and Geraldine Hicks of Frederick, Md., has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Saint Michael's College.

Drennan is a junior who is majoring in computer science.

Drennan graduated from Frederick High School.
