Area roundup -- Thurmont romps in opening round of Junior states

CHEWSVILLE -- There was no shortage of highlights for the Thurmont Junior All-Stars on Saturday.

Erin Lambert and Seth Shubert combined on a no-hitter as the District 2 champions routed District 4 champion South Baltimore 42-0 as the Maryland State Junior Tournament got underway at Valley Senior League.

Lambert and Shubert both homered for Thurmont, which plays Hancock in the winners' bracket semifinal today at Valley at 1:30 p.m.

In other opening round games, Collin Nicholson homered to lead Elkton to a 13-6 win over West Salisbury, while Talbot defeated Waldorf, 9-3.


West Salisbury and Waldorf meet in an elimination game today at 1:30 at Maugansville Senior League, while Elkton and Talbot square off in the other winners' bracket game at Valley at 5:30.

PONY stars stay alive

BOARDMAN, Ohio -- The Hagerstown PONY 14 All-Stars stayed alive in the East Zone West Region tournament with a pair of wins.

Hagerstown hit six home runs in a 16-4 win over St. Clairsville (Ohio) in the first game. Tyler Byers homered twice, while Charles Cvijanovich, Philip Pietro, Jason Mayles and Dylan Dopson each hit one homer. Dylan Appel had three hits and four RBIs, while Cvijanovich, Pietro and Mayles each had two hits.

Logan Appel and Aaron Jones combined on a two-hitter with eight strikeouts as Hagerstown blanked Chambersburg 10-0 in the second game. Mayles and Andrew Yacyk each had two hits, including a home run, for Hagerstown. Yacyk drove in four runs.

Hagerstown plays in the losers' bracket final today at 11 a.m. The championship round begins at 1:30 p.m.

Lost River Classic

MATHIAS, W.Va. -- Three Hagerstown riders competed at the Lost River Classic 60-mile race.

Brian Fouche, 26, placed 15th in the men's pro division, while Mike Spinnler, 50, was 10th and Tim Lung, 53, was 18th in the men's Masters 35-and-older race.

Spinnler and Lung compete for Antietam Velo Club/Team Hagerstown-Washington County Tourism.
