Mail Call

July 25, 2009

"I wonder how many veterans know that they can now salute the flag in civilian clothes. In the Defense Authorization Act of 2008, veterans and out-of-uniform military were authorized to hand-salute during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag. In the Defense Authorization Act of 2009, the hand salute was authorized for this same group during the playing of the National Anthem. As a veteran with six years of military service, I am proud to, once again, be able to honor my flag by saluting her. All veterans should take the opportunity now afforded them to salute Old Glory. We have earned that right."

"Please do not ruin the peaceful canal experience in Williamsport by re-watering the canal and charging for boat rides. ... Spending taxpayers' money to build something so that a handful of small businessmen can prosper - so we can get more tax money - is what is wrong with this country."

"I had a friend went to visit the house in Sharpsburg with the pasture and wildflowers instead of a lawn. It was really green and had plenty of wildflowers in it. It looked really great to us."

"Thanks for publishing the 'Do Not Call' number, but how about stopping text message ads? Maybe it's supposed to be covered by same list, but I sure get a lot of them."

- Hancock

"It's sad that everything costs money these days. You can't go to a zoo, aquarium, pool, amusement park or even a 'fake' beach, because you have to pay an entrance fee. Does anyone have any ideas of where to take kids for a day trip before school starts?"

- Hagerstown

"I was devastated when I recently read in the paper that a person who was turned down by a veterinarian because of a lack of money decided to take it upon themselves to personally destroy their pet of 19 years. Why would they not take it to the SPCA and have it euthanized?"

- Hagerstown

"I just got back from the agricultural exhibition, which was wonderful, but I could not find a single chicken there. What is the point of an ag fair without any chickens? Why are there no chickens at our ag fair?"

- Sharpsburg

"It's Wednesday morning, and I just read in the paper where the City Council approved Wind Down Friday, so they'll close the first block of South Potomac Street on Fridays from 5 to 9, through Sept. 18. Well, if they're gonna do that, why don't they do it for the rest of the week? We can have Reroute Saturday from Wind Down Friday, Start All Over Sunday, Celebrate Back to Work Monday, Think About the Rest of the Week Tuesday, Over the Hump Wednesday, Thank God It's Thursday - and that brings us back to Wind Down Friday. So there you go. Let's do it for the whole week."

"I just want to say what a great place Community Free Clinic is. I was going there for three years, and what respect and care the entire staff showed me and treated me. I will truly miss all of you. May God bless all of you, and thank God there is a place like Community Free Clinic. Thanks again."

"Bigger government and higher taxes - that's the Obama way."

"I'm calling concerning the situation in Pa. It's at Mentzer Gap Road in Rouzerville, Pa. They want to cut the trees down. I think they ought to save the trees and move the intersection. That would be a great idea."

"Greed, greed, greed, is what I think of a vet who would turn away a poor, sick, old dog, to be inhumanely destroyed by its owner."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"I'm calling about I just recently spent five days in the Washington County Hospital, and having some small heart problems and some other things, and I give them young ladies out there - or elderly ladies - a hard time, and I realized what a mistake I made, because you're not coherent when you're ... they give me good service and they put up with a bunch of mouth which they shouldn't have had to, and I sure appreciate the nurses from the Washington County Hospital."

- Hagerstown

"It's time to get rid of the county commissioners. How can property values be dropping yet taxes keep going up?"

- Hagerstown

"Wow, with all this talk about universal health care, I've decided to quit my job, take up smoking, take up drinking, engage in reckless behavior, because the government's going to take care of me no matter what I do. And ... by quitting my job, it's great, because now they won't be collecting taxes from me to pay for all this."

- Hagerstown

"Usually when watching TV, a commercial will come on and I'll start channel surfing. Now I've found myself channel surfing, trying to find the commercial after it's over, it is so good. It's the traveler's commercial, with the dog who is all worried about his bone and what to do with it, how to keep it safe. Incredible, incredible commercial, plus - and this is where my question comes in - who is the person that sings the song about trouble?"

- Hagerstown

"I want to thank the County Roads for blacktopping my lane down here off of Neck Road, Bud Light Lane, with their extra blacktop. Thanks again."
