Mont Alto to host truck, tractor pull

MONT ALTO, Pa. -- The Mont Alto Fire Co. will host its first truck and tractor pull Saturday night at the carnival grounds off Pa. 997.

Company President Charlie Baker said organizers are hoping for a big crowd to generate income for the department. Planning has been under way for eight months.

Classes are 1850 Mini Rod, 4000 Small Block 4x4 Trucks, 8000 Street Diesel 4x4, 13000 Farm Stock and 8500 Mod Turbo. The event starts at 6 p.m.

Admission costs $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 8 to 12.

Some bleacher seating will be available, but Baker said spectators might want to bring lawn chairs.

"A lot of them will sit on the back of their pickup trucks, too," he said.

Some neighbors complained to the Quincy Township Supervisors about the potential for noise, dust and oil leaking from tractors.

"If there's a specific problem, we'll address that after the tractor pull," Supervisor Kerry Bumbaugh said.

The fire department agreed to not allow tractor pulls after 10 p.m. Also, a firetruck will dampen the track to minimize dirt. Two ambulance crews will be on site.

"All safety precautions are being covered," Baker said. "We did everything required by law and took steps further."

The track was developed with the Franklin County Tractor Pullers Association, he said.

"We don't have the tax base to support the fire department, so we have to support their fundraising activities," Bumbaugh said.

The carnival grounds, on 15 acres, opened to the public in 2008. The carnivals drew so many people in 2008 and 2009 that Baker said the department is looking to create more parking.
