Winding down with Adam Taylor

Hagerstown native Adam Taylor has more than one reason to be excited about his upcoming tour. He's performing in venues from Lancaster, Pa., to Portland, Ore.

"This is my first coast-to-coast tour," Taylor said in a telephone interview from the road. "I rarely ever get the chance to play my hometown. I'm really looking forward to it."

Taylor lives in Lanscaster, but grew up in Hagerstown.

On Friday, July 24, he will be playing two shows during his stop in Maryland.

"It's been at least two years since I played in Hagerstown," Taylor said. "I'm really excited about playing at (The) Maryland Theatre. It seems to be a really relaxed atmosphere. I'll be playing for about an hour at each venue. So that's around 10 to 12 songs."

All except one of the songs Taylor will be performing are originals.

"I have one cover song, but the rest were written by me," he said. "I can never put a finger on my genre and no one else can seem to either."

Most of Taylor's songs reflect a folk and bluegrass style and share a melodic complexity influenced by some of his favorite artists - Donovan, the Zombies, Saul Williams, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits.

"If you look beyond the catchy melodies there is often a greater depth," Taylor said. "At the end of the day, I just want my music to be listenable. I hope my CD will be something people want to listen to on the road with their friends."

Taylor's tour will be a monthlong event in which his friend and vocal counterpart, Kate Young, will be joining him.
