Maugansville children plan carnival to benefit Humane Society

July 22, 2009

The second annual Carnival at Maugans Meadows hosted by Maugansville youngsters Tana and Jack McKinsey, Emily Folk, Kristin Weaver, Hannah Colvin, Cal and Sadie Thrailkill will be held Saturday in the back yard of 17810 Jennifer Lane from 1 to 4 p.m.

The event was originally conceived of and developed in 2008 by Tana and Jack McKinsey, Emily Folk, Kristin Weaver and Hannah Colvin as a way to promote shelter pet adoptions and raise money for the Humane Society of Washington County.

The inspiration for the project came from the McKinsey's dog Pixi. A Labrador retriever they adopted from the shelter in 2008, Pixi made the children aware of the needs of shelter pets.

"We hope to make people understand that shelter animals deserve love and they need to find permanent homes," Tana said. "We hope we can help by raising money for the homeless animals in our community."

The success of last year's event prompted the youngsters to hold the event again. Last year's carnival raised $260 in two hours. Everyone involved is hopeful this year's event will be an even bigger event than last year's.

The Humane Society is at 13011 Maugansville Road in Hagerstown. Call 301-733-2060 or go to www.hswcmd.org for information on animal-related issues, directions to the shelter and information about programs and services.
